Intervista a Meghann B Wright dopo il live al Van’s Warped Tour

Ho avuto il piacere di sedermi con Meghann B Wright per una breve intervista, durante il Van’ s Warped Tour a Orlando.
Essere nativa delle Hawaii, come ha influenzato il tuo stile musicale?
Beh, lì ci sono un sacco di stili musicali che immagino non siano così comuni altrove e poi vengo da una famiglia di musicisti. Mio padre mi ha sempre portato per concerti, la prima volta credo avessi solo 5 anni.
Come ci si sente ad avere un voce paragonabile ad artisti quali Bonnie Raitt e Amy Winehouse?
E’ fantastico perchè ammiro entrambe
Come cantautrice, chi o che cosa ti ha influenzato di più?
Nel songwriting artisti quali Tom Petty e Dolly Parton. Prima di diventare cantautrice scrivevo canzoni ma prima suonavo il sax, il basso o la chitarra. Poi ho iniziato a studiare come scrivevano Elvis Costello,Tom Petty e artisti simili e ho capito la differenza con lo scrivere semplicemente musica. Si può avere una buona melodia ma nel momento in cui inserisci il testo tutto cambia. Ed è importante che tutto quello che scrivo non sia troppo personale, in modo che le persone possano associare quello che ascoltano alla loro esperienza, a quello che stanno attraversando.
Il titolo dell’ album “Nothing Left to Lose” è una dichiarazione di come sei oggi musicalmente?
Sì. In realtà è tutto racchiuso in una frase del brano” Leaving Cleveland. “Stavo uscendo da un brutto momento della mia vita nel quale ho perso molte cose.
Cos’hai in programma dopo il Warped Tour?
Nessun programma, mi riposerò un po’. I primi 6 mesi dell’anno sono stati impegnativi. Stavo ancora finendo l’album ed ero già in tour, ppi sono andata a Nashville per registrare con altre persone. Ora ho intenzione di prendermi un paio di settimane di riposo. A dire il vero, ora che ne stiamo parlando, mi è venuto in mente che voglio trasferirmi a Nashville. Sono stata a New York per 6 anni e mi piace, ma penso di aver bisogno di una nuova atmosfera.
Con quale artista, vivo o scomparso, vorresti duettare?
Wow vivo o morto, è difficile . Una parte di me ti direbbe Steven Tyler Sarebbe dovuto essere un tizio di sicuro parte di me vuole dire Steven Tyler perché cantiamo in modo molto simile, ma l’altra parte di me ti risponderebbe che dovrei duettare con qualcuno totalmente diverso.Ok, vorrei duettare con Elvis Costello. Sono una sua grande fan e le mie chitarre portano tutte il nome delle sue canzoni

Meghann B Wright is a Singer/Songwriter with an equal amount of love and influence from a wide style of genres. Meghann Wright’s songs of love, liquored memories, heartbreak, and resilience resonate with anyone listening. The Brooklyn, NY-based Singer/Songwriter is a songstress that finds her way into all of our hearts, traveling a path paved with lost loves, through a life of contrasts that can be felt and heard the moment you push play.
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Meghann B Wright for a short Q&A, during Van’s Warped Tour in Orlando over the weekend.
Being a native of Hawaii, how did that influence your musical style?
Well there were a lot of musical styles that I guess are not that common here like Polynesian specifically and I come from a musical family. My dad would take me to concerts, I think for the first I was like 5.”
How does it feel to have your voice compared to such artists as Bonnie Raitt & Amy Winehouse?
That’s great. I admire both of them.
As a song writer, who or what has influenced you most?
Like, songwriting style, I guess people I look up to, like Tom Petty and Dolly Parton. A big part of what I started to do when I started being a songwriter like really changed my writing because before I would play sax or bass or guitar jams and I would never really finish so, I would look to people like Elvis Costello and Tom Petty and stuff like that, and how they write songs and to me it’s like, it’s just, so different than just writing music. You know, you can be like, that is a cool hook or a good melody but, when you attach lyrics, it totally changes it. It is important that what I’m writing isn’t overbearingly personal so that people can kind of relate the lyrics to what they are going through.
The title of your album “Nothing Left to Lose” – is that a statement of where you are musically?
Yeah kinda. It is actually a lyric that is at the end of the song “Leaving Cleveland”. I was coming out of a pretty bad time in my life where I did lose a lot of things.
What is next for you after Warped Tour?
I don’t have any touring. I’m going to take a bit of a break. The first 6 months of the year have been crazy. Touring, moved, finished my record, I was still writing and recording my record while touring. Then I was going down to Nashville to record with other people. So, I haven’t had a vacation since sometime last year. So I’m going to take a couple weeks off. Actually, now that we are talking about it, I think I’m going to move to Nashville. I’ve been in New York for 6 years and I love it, but I think I just need a new vibe.
If you could do a duet with anyone alive or dead, who would it be?
Wow alive or dead. That is hard. It would have to be a dude for sure. Part of me wants to say Steven Tyler because we sing kind of the same way, but then maybe it should be someone that sings differently. I’m going to say Elvis Costello. I’m a huge fan and name every one of my guitars after his songs.
After meeting Meghann today, I have to say she is a super cool chick that you would just want to hang out with and have a few drinks. Thanks Meghann for taking the time with me today.
