Intervista a MC Lars, il rapper con un tocco lirico

Andrew Nielsen è un rapper americano, produttore, scrittore, disegnatore e alunno della Stanford University, conosciuto con il nome d’arte MC Lars. Si è autoproclamato l’autore del “post-punk laptop rap”, ed è stato uno dei primi rapper della scena underground ad essere un punto di riferimento per le band post-punk ed emo. E’ il fondatore e CEO dell’etichetta discografica indipendente Horris Records e si è classificato secondo al contest 2005 Eisley on the Yahoo! Music ‘s “Who’s the Next Big Thing?”
MC Lars ha concesso un’intervista a noi di Zest durante la tappa ad Orlando del Warped Tour.
Il tuo vero nome è Andrew Nielsen … come ti è venuto in mente il nome d’arte MC Lars?
MC Lars è tratto dal film di Ben Stiller, Heavyweights, degli anni ’90. I protagonisti vanno ad un campo estivo e lì vi è un consigliere di nome Lars e ho pensato che era un nome esilarante, ho aggiunto MC (Maestro di Cerimonie) ed è stato il mio soprannome da quando avevo dodici o tredici anni.
Hai studiato a Stanford, hai mai pensato che la tua istruzione ti avrebbe aiutato ad avere una carriera musicale?
Gran bella domanda. Ho sempre voluto fare musica o arte in qualche modo. Ho seguito un programma di studio all’estero a Oxford nel 2003 e lì ho incontrato un’ etichetta indipendente, la Truck Records, che mi ha aiutato a iniziare. Penso che la mia formazione e la mia esperienza all’estero siano state importanti per la mia carriera.
Dal 1998 ad oggi, qual è tra i tuoi album il tuo preferito?
Il mio album che uscirà nel mese di ottobre è il mio preferito. Si chiama The Zombie Dinosaur LP ma, sicuramente, adoro anche The Graduated, che è stato il mio primo vero album che ho finito giusto quando ho finito il college. Mi ha aiutato a iniziare. E ‘stata la prima uscita ufficiale e ho un sacco di emozioni legate a quell’album.
Cosa significa essere “nerdcore rapper”?
Nerdcore è un termine che è stato inventato nel 2006-2007 dal mio amico MC di Brooklyn, che è l’iniziatore del genere. E ‘un po’ come una miscela di nerd e hardcore. E ‘ una specie di sorta di rap nerd.
Nerd perché è più intellettuale?
Forse sì. Ci sono canzoni che parlano di Edgar Allan Poe. C’è una canzone di Star Wars sul mio nuovo album. E ‘sicuramente al di fuori del mainstream. E’ divertente perchè un sacco di mainstream rap è un pò nerd.
Che musica ti ha influenzato a diventare un rapper?
Sono sempre stato un fan di Weird Al Yankovic perché amo come riesce a prendere altri generi e culture ed essere spiritoso e intelligente nel parlarne. Sai, il rap è fresco, si mescola bene ad altri generi.
Hai lavorato con artisti del calibro di Kool Keith, Roger Lima & Watsky … C’è qualcuno con cui ti piacerebbe lavorare in futuro?
Mi piacerebbe fare qualcosa con Dr. Dre, un giorno. Ha beats sorprendenti.
Qual è l’aspetto migliore di essere parte del Van’s Warped Tour?
Mi piace il Warped Tour, perché è davvero l’unico tour che mette insieme tutti i generi e perchè è ben organizzato. Che si può esibire, rilassarsi, incontrare i fans; è la terza estate che passo con il Warped e sono orgoglioso e grato.Certo, bisogna svegliarsi presto, pensare agli allestimenti, ma è una grande opportunità.
Il tuo nuovo singolo Dragon Blood fa riferimento a Games of Thrones … sei un fan ?
Sì, un grande fan. E ‘come un moderno Shakespeare.
Sei rimasto anche tu scioccato come tutti gli altri riguardo Jon Snow?
SPOILER ALERT – Si sono rimasto molto sorpreso. Non ne avevo idea.
Che cosa ti ha spinto a dare vita alla tua etichetta discografica “Horris Records”?
Sai, ho visto tanti amici firmare per etichette e poi essere dimenticati o addirittura ignorati. E ‘ così bello poter gestire i miei artisti, avere il controllo totale; siamo un’ etichetta piccola e non è facile. E ‘facile fare i soldi se puoi permetterti di investire mezzo milione di dollari su di te, ma io non posso, quindi uso molto Kickstarter che fa preordinare le copie dell’album, quindi sono i fans a pagare per la produzione.

Andrew Nielsen is an American rapper, producer, writer, cartoonist and Stanford University Alumnus, known by his stage name MC Lars. He is the self-proclaimed originator of “post-punk laptop rap”, and he was one of the first underground rappers to sample and reference post-punk and emo bands. He is the founder and CEO of the independent record label Horris Records. He was the runner-up to Eisley on the Yahoo! Music ‘s “Who’s the Next Big Thing?” contest in 2005.
MC Lars took a few minutes to sit down for a quick interview during the Orlando date of this years Van’s Warped Tour.
Your given name is Andrew Nielsen… how did you come up with the stage name MC Lars?
So, MC Lars is from the Ben Stiller movie, Heavyweights, from the 90’s. They go to a summer camp and there is a counselor named Lars and I just thought that was a hilarious name so, I added MC to it (Master of Ceremonies) and it’s been my nickname since I was like twelve or thirteen.
You are Stanford educated, did you know your education would lead you a music career?
Wow that is a great question. I always wanted to do music or art in some capacity. I did a study abroad program in Oxford in 2003 and I met an Indie Label there that helped me get started called Truck Records. I think it was just the opportunity of having and international community through my academic background, that is what allowed me to do it, ya know?
You have been putting out albums since 1998, which has been your favorite so far?
My album that comes out in October is my favorite. It is called The Zombie Dinosaur LP but, my favorite other than that one would be The Graduate, which was my first real album that I finished right when I finished college. It helped me get started. It was the first official release so, there are a lot of emotional memories with it.
Can you explain what it means to be nerdcore rapper?
Nerdcore is a term that was invented by my friend MC, from Brooklyn, that started the genre. It is kind of like a mixture of nerd and hardcore. So it got called the term in 2006-2007. It kind of means nerdy rap.
Nerdy because it is more intellectual?
Maybe, yeah. There are songs about Edgar Allen Poe. There is a Star Wars song on my new album. It is definitely outside of the mainstream. It is kinda funny how a lot of mainstream rap is kinda nerdy now.
What music influenced you to become a rapper?
I was always a fan of Weird Al Yankovic because I loved how he could take other genres and cultures and be very satirical and smart in talking about it. You know, rap is cool, it blends itself well to other genre hybridization.
You have worked with artists such as Kool Keith, Roger Lima & Watsky… Is there anyone that you would love to work with in the future?
I would love to do something with Dr. Dre someday. He has amazing beats.
What is the best thing about being a part of The Vans Warped Tour?
I like the Warped Tour because it is really the only tour that hits every market in the country in such a short time and it is so well organized. That you can kind of relax into it, and perform, and meet the fans. You feel very taken care of. This is my third summer on it and I’m really thankful they keep bringing me back and I’m trying to work harder and harder each time. It’s about waking up early, putting up your posters, setting up your tent, really taking this opportunity seriously. Nothing is handed to you.
Your new single Dragon Blood has a Games of Thrones reference… are you a fan of the show?
Yeah, big fan of it. It is like a modern day Shakespeare.
Were you as shocked as everyone else about Jon Snow?
SPOILER ALERT – Yeah I was very surprised. I had no idea.
What made you want to start your own record label “Horris Records”?
You know, I’ve seen so many friends signed to labels and get forgotten or dropped or ignored. It is nice owning all my masters, because it means that I have complete control, and it is smaller than a big label but, I love being able to be in charge of everything and also having the royalties come in from it. It is easy to never make money if your label is spending half-a-million dollars to promote you. Kickstarter is awesome. I use Kickstarter a lot. It helps crowd fund all the projects so, I don’t have to. Fans can pre-order the album so that pays for the production.
