Intervista ai Relapse Symphony

I Relapse Symphony hanno iniziato il loro percorso musicale nel 2012 a Washington, DC. Hanno pubblicato il loro EP di debutto,Time’s Running Out nel 2012 e successivamente l’album Shadows. Prima di intraprendere il Warped Tour, hanno rilasciato il loro ultimo lavoro, Born to Burn. Fin dagli albori hanno dimostrato di saper stare sul palco e la loro base di fans è cresciuta sempre più; hanno condiviso il palco con gruppi come Black Veil Brides, William Control, Eyes Set To Kill,The Dead Rabbits e molti altri. I loro spettacoli meritano davvero di essere visti.
Ho avuto la possibilità di sedermi per un po ‘con JC Charles (chitarra) e Ray Miller (chitarra) durante la tappa ad Orlando del Warped tour.
Come vi è venuto il nome della band?
JC: Uhh è divertente, volevo un nome che non palesasse subito quello che la band fa. Ci sono un sacco di band là fuori, e quando le sento, posso immaginare subito come sono. Volevamo essere un po ‘ambigui. Io amo la parola sinfonia,è una bella parola. Mi piace anche la connotazione più cupa di ricaduta come una sorta di oscuramento, yin & yang … funziona bene.
A cosa vi siete ispirati per il vostro nuovo album Born to Burn?
Ray: E ‘praticamente tutto quello che ci è successo.
Quindi c’è una storia dietro?
JC: Non direi che è un concept album, ma avevamo scritto un album e lo abbiamo buttato perchè non funzionava. Così, abbiamo scritto in due settimane un altro album che è Born to Burn.
Wow, 2 settimane?
JC: Sì, penso che è questo il motivo per cui è così energico e si sente dal vivo. Non siamo stati a pensare troppo, è venuto naturalmente, e penso che sia la cosa migliore che abbiamo mai fatto.
Quali artisti hanno influenzato il vostro stile musicale?
Ray: Per me personalmente, All Time Low, The Used e Guns & Roses.
JC: Direi Clash, The Beach Boys, quando ero un ragazzino, e Billy Joel. So che suona ridicolo, ma mi sono innamorato della canzone d’autore. Taylor Swift! Onestamente, io sono un grande fan di Taylor Swift!
Ok, dal momento che hai citato Taylor Swift, cosa ne pensi del fatto che è andata contro Apple?
JC: il fatto è accaduto il primo giorno del Warped Tour e non avevamo accesso a internet così abbiamo sentito solo le voci su ciò che è realmente accaduto. So che ha Taylor Swift ha tolto la sua musica da Spotify, poi Apple è uscito con la sua versione di Spotify e lei ha tolto la sua musica anche da lì.
In sostanza Apple non aveva intenzione di pagare l’artista durante il periodo di prova di tre mesi.
JC: Penso che sia un po ‘come Napster. L’artista più piccolo / band può beneficiare della visibilità. Una band come noi, non guadagna con la musica. Quindi, se mi dici che sempre più persone stanno per avere la possibilità di ascoltare la nostra musica, allora sì, ci va bene! Io credo che ci sia un punto in cui devi stabilire chi sei e capire che questo non è un lavoro facile, e che tutti si meritano di essere rimborsati per il vostro sforzo. Lei è la più grande artista del mondo e se ha la capacità di farlo e vuole farlo, deve!
Che cosa possono aspettarsi i fan quando vengono a vedervi dal vivo?
JC: Oggi, non sono sicuro. Il nostro cantante è stato dal medico tutto il giorno e potrebbe anche vomitare sul palco.Un ragazzo mi ha detto la sua opinione sul nostro set la scorsa notte. Eravamo ad un barbecue il 4 luglio e stavo camminando quando questo ragazzo mi ha fermato. Non avevo idea di chi fosse e mi ha chiesto, “Relapse Symphony?”, e ho risposto, sì. Ha detto che aveva visto la nostra esibizione quel giorno e che siamo fottutamente folli e che siamo una delle band più pazze che ha visto al Warped Tour!Per me è un complimento enorme.
In che modo questo calore vi aiuta sul palco?
JC: Onestamente, me ne accorgo quando è troppo tardi. L’adrenalina entra in circolo e poi tutto ad un tratto non mi sento le gambe. Succede ogni giorno, alla canzone 3 sono già stordito.
C’è qualche band del Warped Tour con cui non vedevate l’ora di esibirvi?
JC: Beh, noi non sapevamo quali altre band fossero al Warped Tour e l’attesa è stata eccitante. Sapevamo dei New Years Day, con cui siamo molto amici. E ‘stato bello anche incontrare nuove persone e trovare nuove band che ci piacciono davvero.
Ray: Family Force Five, davvero ragazzi carini.
Se potessi, con quale artista lavoreresti?
JC: Potrebbe essere un produttore?
Certo.
JC: John Feldman
Perché?
JC: Ha realizzato tutti i miei album preferiti. Credo che sia un genio. Comprerò gli album prodotti da lui anche se non mi piace la band. Per esempio, Sleeping With Sirens, non sono mai stato un grande fan, ma quando ho sentito che stavano lavorando con John Feldman, ho comprato subito l’album. Lui è semplicemente incredibile! Tutto ciò che fa è ottimo!
Ray: Andrew Goldstein
JC: Andrew Goldstein è un cantautore dalla nostra città natale, che era in una band chiamata The Friday Night Boys, ma ora è noto perchè ha prodotto Let It Go dalla colonna sonora di Frozen. Ha lavorato con un sacco di gente, ma questa è la cosa più importante che ha fatto.
Dopo il Warped?
JC: Stiamo per registrare un paio di video musicali e stiamo preparando alcuni tour e per il momento non vogliamo tornare a casa. Il disco è uscito da poco e vogliamo spingere al massimo. Siamo una band che ama lavorare. Ho sentito gente lamentarsi qui ogni ora per il caldo, ma io preferisco essere al Warped che altrove.
Come hanno accolto i fan la vostra nuova musica?
JC: E’ la musica più apprezzata fino ad ora. Su YouTube ci sono stati in passato così tanti commenti di antipatia o pollice verso,perchè ad alcune persone piace sparlare solo per il gusto di farlo, ma quando abbiamo messo il nuovo lavoro, non ho visto nessun giudizio negativo.
Ray: La risposta è stata sorprendente. I ragazzi vengono ai concerti e sanno le parole delle canzoni che suoniamo. È pazzesco!
Quindi il vostro pubblico è in crescita?
JC: Oh sì, l’altro giorno stavamo suonando e siamo passati dai 20 ragazzi adaverne 150, che a fine concerto sono venuti a comprare l’album.Penso che sia bello vedere di persona i nuovi fan che scoprono la nostra musica. E’ divertente perché accade fuori e possiamo vederli. In un club non è possibile vedere le loro facce, quindi è bello vedere i loro volti che godono della nostra musica.

The Relapse Symphony began their musical journey in 2012 in Washington, DC. They released their debut EP, Time’s Running Out in 2012 and followed it up with a full length CD, Shadows. Just a few weeks ago, as they embarked on this year’s Warped Tour, they released their latest, must have cd called Born to Burn. Since the bands inception, they have been presenting their live, energetic stage shows to their rapidly growing fan base while sharing the stage with such bands as Black Veil Brides, William Control, Eyes Set To Kill, The Dead Rabbits, and many more. Their shows have “earned them the reputation of a band that must be seen live to be appreciated”.
I was able to sit down for a bit with JC Charles (guitar) and Ray Miller (guitar) during the Orlando stop of the tour.
How did you come up with the name of the band?
JC: Uhh it’s funny, I wanted a band name that when you heard it, you wouldn’t instantly assume what the band sounded like. There are a lot of bands out there, for better or worse, that when I hear them, I can sort of imagine what the band is like. I wanted to be more open minded and somewhat ambiguous. I love the word symphony, I just like it, it is a beautiful word. I also like the darker connotation of relapse as sort of a darkening light, yin & yang… it just works.
What is the inspiration behind your new album Born to Burn?
Ray: It is basically about everything that has happened to us.
So there is a story behind it?
JC: I wouldn’t say it is a concept album but, we wrote a record and threw it away, it didn’t work. So, we wrote another record and that became Born to Burn. We did it in like 2 weeks.
Wow, 2 weeks?
JC: Yeah, I think that is the reason it is so energetic and it feels live. It feels like our live show because it was written so quickly. We didn’t take a lot of time to over think anything. It was just like, whatever came naturally, and I think it is the best thing we have ever done.
What artists have influenced your musical style?
Ray: For me personally, All Time Low, The Used, and Guns & Roses.
JC: Man that is tough, you said some good ones. I would say The Clash, The Beach Boys when I was a little kid, and Billy Joel. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I fell in love with the song writing. Taylor Swift! Honestly, I am a huge Taylor Swift fan!
Ok so since you brought up Taylor Swift, how do you feel about her going against Apple?
JC: That happened the first day of Warped Tour and we have no internet access so, we have heard rumors of what actually happened. I know she pulled her music from Spotify. Then, Apple came out with their version of Spotify and she pulled her music from there.
Basically Apple wasn’t going to pay artist during their 3 month trial period.
JC: I think it is sort of like Napster back in the day. The smaller artist/bands can benefit from the exposure. A band like us, we don’t make money off music anyway. So, if you tell me that more people are going to have a chance to hear our band, then yeah, go for it! I do think there is a point where you have establish yourself and this is not an easy job, you deserve to be reimbursed for your effort. Your money, your time & energy so, more power to her. She is the biggest artist in the world and if she has the ability to do that and wants to do that, she should.
What can fans expect when they come to see you perform live?
JC: Today, I’m not sure. Our singer has been in the medic tent all day so there may be some throwing up on stage. There’s a lot of jumping and running around. This guy gave me his take on our set last night. We were at a 4th of July barbecue and I was walking off to take leak at a porta potty and a guy stopped me. I had no idea who he was and he says, “Relapse Symphony?”, and I was like, yeah. He said, I watched your set today and your guys are fucking insane! You guys are one of the craziest bands I have seen on this tour. I took that as a huge compliment.
How does this heat affect your guys on stage?
JC: Honestly, I don’t notice it until it’s too late. Like, your adrenaline kicks in and you are going crazy, then all of a sudden you can’t feel your legs, and you’re like, oh, I need to pace myself. It happens every day, song 3 and I’m getting woozy.
Heading out on Warped, was there anyone you were looking forward to touring with?
JC: Well, we didn’t know what other bands were on Warped Tour. We knew we had Warped Tour, and then we had to wait like everyone else to find out who the other bands were, so it was exciting every week. We were tuning in on Wednesdays to see who we were going to be heading out with. There were a few, like New Years Day, a band I am really good friends with. I was stoked when I found out they were going to be out with us. It has also been cool to meet new people and find new bands we really like. The Karma Killers, they were on our stage that we all love.
Ray: Family Force Five, nicest guys.
If you could work with any artist, who would it be?
JC: Could it be a producer?
Yes!
JC: John Feldman
Why?
JC: He has literally produced all my favorite albums. I think he is a genius. I will buy an album that he produced even if I don’t like the band. For example, Sleeping With Sirens, I was never a big fan, just never got into it but, when I heard they were working with John Feldman, I immediately bought the record. He is just amazing! Everything he does is good!
Ray: Andrew Goldstein
JC: Andrew Goldstein is a song writer from our hometown that was in a band called The Friday Night Boys, but now his claim to fame is that he produced Let It Go from the Frozen Soundtrack. He has worked with a lot of people, but that’s his big thing.
What is next for the band after Warped?
JC: We are going to be filming a couple music videos. We are working on some more tours right now, hopefully not going home. We want to stay out there. The record just came out a week ago, so we want to push it hard. We are a band that likes to work. I hear people complain every now & then on this tour about how it’s hot, and it is hot, but I’d rather be here than anywhere else.
How have your fans been embracing the new music?
JC: This is the most positively received piece of music we have ever put out. In the world of YouTube there have been so many dislike comments or thumbs down, some people like to talk shit just to talk shit, but when we put the new stuff out, I haven’t seen one negative thing, and still haven’t.
Ray: The response has been amazing. Kids are coming to the shows knowing the words to the songs we are playing. It’s crazy!
So your fan base is growing?
JC: Oh yeah, to that, the other day we were playing, when we started our set we had maybe 20 kids and near the end it was near 150 and a lot of them came and bought the record. I think it’s cool to see someone discover us right there, live and in person, be affected by the music, then go by the record. It’s fun because, it’s outside, and we can see them. In a club you can’t see their faces, so it is cool to see their faces enjoying the music.
